National Poetry Month

As demonstrated by my fun little post yesterday we are now in April.  That means we are officially in National Poetry Month here in the United States.  In honor of the month you guys can expect to see a lot of poetry from me this month.

I am also going to do some blog hopping and will be offering you guys links out to other poems that I find on other blogs.  Expect to see these links at the bottom of most of my posts for this month.  This way I can encourage you guys to check out more poems and expand your horizons and stuff.

What's the deal with this month anyway?  Get ready.  I'm going to explode your mind with some history.  You ready?  I sure hope so.

April first gained it's literary cred in 1996 under President Bill Clinton. The President stated the following as part of his proclamation.

“National Poetry Month offers us a welcome opportunity to celebrate not only the unsurpassed body of literature produced by our poets in the past, but also the vitality and diversity of voices reflected in the works of today’s American poets. In homes, schools, and libraries across our nation, their creativity and wealth of language enrich our culture and inspire a new generation of Americans to learn the power of reading and writing at its best.”

Clinton said some other stuff as part of the proclamation but that is the paragraph of power.

Fun Fact: More poetry is published in April than any other month in the United States.  This is done on purpose by publishers in honor of the month.

I know poetry isn't for everyone.  Lets face it, the wrong poetry can turn out being super pretentious and makes us writers/poets look like complete fools.  I get it.

However, good poetry can capture the imagination and soul of a writer in a way that a novel just can't quite accomplish.  Moments are captured within beautiful phrases and sent out into the word to grow and prosper.  Succinct word choice and the careful crafting of language can create lasting images that can stay deep within the deepest forgotten corners of minds.

Fiction tells a story.  The type of story can vary greatly but in the end some kind of story or some part of a story is being told.

Poetry is different.  It exists on its own terms.  Its purpose is simply expression itself.  If a picture is worth a thousand words a good poem should be worth 1,001.  It should touch the reader on some deeper level that is hard to explain.  Each poem is an exercise in language and the solution to the exercise is locked up in each individual reader.

I had a rough day at the old day job so I'm not going to try to be creative today.  If I wrote a poem today it would just turn out sub-par.  You guys deserve better.  I am thus just going to leave you with the information about Poetry month and the promise of more poetry to come.  I'll give you my first poem of April tomorrow.

Please feel free to leave lots of comments with links to poems any time this month.  The more the merrier.  I want to spread out as much link love as I can to my fellow poets.  If you aren't a poet but have a particular poem you want to share please also feel free to share a link to the poem on any post this month and discuss why you love the poem.  This includes the most famous works.

I just want to get us talking about poetry as much as possible this month.

May your month be full of ever flowing words dancing together into verse.
